PAUL BUNYAN'S SHOES "In the logging museum at Rhinelander hangs a pair of shoes so huge that they could have been worn by no one but Paul Bunyan. The story goes that Paul once caught a baby muskellunge, carried it home, and put it in a rain barrel outside his cabin. Every day he took the little fish out of the rain barrel and placed it on the ground. In time the muskie learned to walk and, before many months, to abhor water. One day when Paul was walking along th Rib River the fish followed him and tried to cross the fast stream on a fallen log. Halfway across it lost its balance and fell in. Although Paul quickly pulled off his shoes and plunged into the river, his pal had drowned by the time he reached it. Overcome with grief, Paul returned to camp, forgetting his shoes, the pair that are now displayed in the museum." Excerpt from:
