A little about
the history and people of
the Aqua Aire Motel...
by Dick, 2004
Joanne and I bought the Aqua
Aire Motel back in September of 1983. We bought this place from
Myron and Rhoda Hill who owned and operated this place for about
12-13 years. They retired to Florida after leaving here. They
bought the Aqua Aire Motel from the original owners, Joe and
Marge Mastalski. They had the Aqua Aire built for them in about
1959. Their son Joe Jr. is presently a pharmacist in Minocqua.
Marge is enjoying her retirement here in Minocqua, but husband
Joe has passed away. The name "Aqua Aire" may have
an indian origin which I am told means "Where the water
meets the sky." We are owner/operators for 21 years now
and enjoy a wonderful business. We thought of changing the name
when we purchased the property, but were advised to keep the
original name. Hence, Aqua Aire Motel.
Why tradition is important...
Tradition is definitely
evident in a small town where the downtown area has a well-kept
newer look but distinctly an atmosphere of days gone by. Our
business and buildings are just that, well kept with modern amenities
but definately a very warm, old style atmosphere. Tradition is
being able to apply the things my parents taught me in their
very successful restaurant business. Here at the Aqua Aire, my
wife and I greet our guests on one to one basis where we create
new business and also develop new friendships. We are small enough
to do this, that is tradition and most people appreciate this
type of business practice and the individual attention we can
give to all
our guests.
The best part about running this
business and
living up north...
Yes, after 21 years
in the lodging business we could tell you many stories about
how husbands and wives treat each other, how parents raise their
children, how we find senior citizens so precious, but most of
all even up here there are the homeless who come to your door,
usually through a social agency, where these people are to grateful
for a roof over their head and a cup of coffee and an interested
person to listen to their life problems. Joanne and I count our
blessing for the successes in our lives due mostly to the Aqua
Aire Motel.
Why we like living up north...
While living in the
suburbs of Milwaukee, we were fortunate enough to vacation in
northern Wisconsin for many summers. We also came north to snowmobile
in the winter months. I soon came to realize that northern Wisconsin
was definately north of the tension zone, and that one day I
would like to live and work here. We chose Minocqua because the
people -- especially the business community -- are so friendly,
the "island city" is so neat and clean, I can't imagine
who wouldn't want to live here. We thoroughly enjoy the experience
of all four seasons at their fullest. The closeness of nature,
the landscape and wildlife is much more profound than the area
we come from. The religious and medical community is well represented
and we have many excellent restaurants. We have enjoyed building
the small business we bought in 1983 and would do it all over
again.
