A Message from Annette Smith, Owner of Smith Realty
Since 1946 we have been selling special places to make special memories. From outdoor thrones to spas, Lake Superior to the Big Chip, The Brule River to a golden pond, Convenience stores to resorts, 5 acres to a hunting preserve -- we've sold them all! Let us help you become a part of the great northwoods we call home. Available weekends and evenings. Thinking of selling? We do make house calls. The Smith Realty office is now located on the Namekagon River
just outside of Hayward. From my desk I can view all sorts of
wildlife and activities: from deer to eagles and in the spring,
the welcome sight of kayaks. Summer brings the pontoons and tubers;
Fall, the fly fisherman; Winter the snow walkers and snomobilers.

Memories of Hayward
Closings can be quite interesting... One time we had an old bachelor come to the closing with a sack full of money he had dug up from under his house. My mother followed him around the office with a spray can. Needless to say, the cashier at the bank was quite taken back when I brought the deposit to her. One closing the buyer (a commodity broker) flew my dad and I to Duluth to a bank in his private jet. Five years later he parked his bike outside the office door and came in for coffee. He was broke and had lost everything. We had a property for sale, the seller was the spittin' image of Ernest Hemmingway. We always kidded that we would have to find a Young Hemmingway for the home. One day, he walked in the office complete with kakis, white shirt, surplus shoes and socks and bought the home. Having 2 Hemmingway type characters made for a memorable closing. At a resort closing we had to keep the seller's wife and the buyer's wife in seperate offices so each would have all their hair when we were done!
Celebrity Encounters at the office... In the 1960's one day Jack and Bobby Kennedy strolled into the office like a couple of old neighbors dropping in to shoot the breeze! One summer Ed Bradley (60 Minutes) came in. We didn't recognize him at first -- he was wearing torn jeans, shirt and a baseball cap. We enjoyed quite a visit. My dad (Frank) had sold Preston Tucker property on Round Lake before he built his revolutionary car of the future: 'The Tucker 48.' After being crushed by the 3 automobile giants he lost all --- even his beloved Round Lake. Bud Grand (Vikings Coach)
and his dogs were always a welcome sight at the office. My mom
was the water girl. |
