A Message from Annette Smith, Owner of Smith Realty

Everyone always said I cut my teeth on my dad's desk.

Since 1946 we have been selling special places to make special memories. From outdoor thrones to spas, Lake Superior to the Big Chip, The Brule River to a golden pond, Convenience stores to resorts, 5 acres to a hunting preserve -- we've sold them all! Let us help you become a part of the great northwoods we call home. Available weekends and evenings. Thinking of selling? We do make house calls.

The Smith Realty office is now located on the Namekagon River just outside of Hayward. From my desk I can view all sorts of wildlife and activities: from deer to eagles and in the spring, the welcome sight of kayaks. Summer brings the pontoons and tubers; Fall, the fly fisherman; Winter the snow walkers and snomobilers.

My assistant Smitty (pictured below) and I love matching people to properties. If we don't have what you are seeking we sure will dour best to find it.

Memories of Hayward

Memories of old Hayward...

The list of resorts is from a old book I have published in 1932. Maybe some of your viewers can identify some of the older resorts.

Hayward was a lot different when I was growing up. At the end of main the weekly pow-wows were held. The Walker Hotel was home to a variety of business:

At Lavilahs beauty salon you were guaranteed the most stinking perm in town, Wades Bookkeeping and Sids dress shop were side by side.Who could forget old crabby Doc Wyant who seemed to be the fore runner of Gunsmoke. The Walker Hotel dining room offered the best food in town and Bill O'brien in his white shirt, bow tie, chewing on his cigar was determined it was to stay that way.The talking indian stood in front of Schmits, the pop corn popper was in front of Ubbies. We could wander into Petersons Shoe Shop where Levi could fix and sew anything. If we needed something metal fixed we high-tailed it down to Larrabees blacksmith shop -- he could always fix anything and we got to hear some pretty tale tales! Tony Grey the kindly barber always fed the ducks at Shues Pond then they would follow his car back up the alley to the barber shop. Above Dunsters dept store was the dentist office of Doc Davis the always smiling white haired guy with the bright turquoise belt buckle and ring. Rivkins was one of our favorite shopping stops: they carried eveything from groceries, meats to some of the coolest clothes we thought and we always got to talk to Vern Woodbeck one of our local artists. We always stoppped in at Ewigs Land Office where we got to hear Harold and Ann's stories of all the fantastic countries and places they had been.
