A Message from Annette Smith, Owner of Smith Realty

Everyone always said I cut my teeth on my dad's desk.

Since 1946 we have been selling special places to make special memories. From outdoor thrones to spas, Lake Superior to the Big Chip, The Brule River to a golden pond, Convenience stores to resorts, 5 acres to a hunting preserve -- we've sold them all! Let us help you become a part of the great northwoods we call home. Available weekends and evenings. Thinking of selling? We do make house calls.

The Smith Realty office is now located on the Namekagon River just outside of Hayward. From my desk I can view all sorts of wildlife and activities: from deer to eagles and in the spring, the welcome sight of kayaks. Summer brings the pontoons and tubers; Fall, the fly fisherman; Winter the snow walkers and snomobilers.

My assistant Smitty (pictured below) and I love matching people to properties. If we don't have what you are seeking we sure will dour best to find it.

Memories of old Hayward...

I was watching snowmobiles go across the bridge last nite and remembered when I first started snowmobiling. The machines were small and we had no choice of fancy clothes, usually the surplus store was our oufitter with snowmobile helmits, those ugly white snow bunny boots and the big mittens, army jackets were usually the style. We had a group that on Sunday would pack lunches to cook in the woods, we made our own trails and rode by the deer yards, crossed some beautiful country and never met another machine. One day during the week the women would ride and one day the men. A person from a lake or area would lead the group. We usually called ahead to a tavern who would open that day for us and have a lunch ready. Business during the week was almost unheard of. When we had our office on Main Street I rode my machine into work and parked in front of the office almost all winter. We always had a ice shack on Nelson lake that was the big family gathering place on Sunday, for fishing, skatin and sliding. Most of our neighbors joined us and the food was cooked outdoors, even the fresh fish was always to die for!

When Smittys has a beer bar that was the only TV in the area. Every friday nite when the boxing fights were on everyone in the neighborhood came to watch and we always had a pot luck with my mom furnishing the meat. Bob and Madge (from Echo Bay Resort, directly across the road) came quite often. She always brought a real good dessert. Madge was in to making sock dolls, she taught my sister and I how to make them. She was very active in Eastern Star, when my familyand i joined she got us very active. I always remember the sparkling white chairs they had lined up in the front yard, quite often we would go over and sit with them. Bob took us fishing quite a bit.

Celebrity Encounters at the office contd...

My family was friends with Karl Ogren a well- known prize fighter who had a training camp on Lake Sissabagama. We had some good fish frys at the camp! Karl was quite an avid fisherman and cook!

"Just ran across your web site. My grandmother was Karl's aunt. Karl stayed at my grandmother's boarding house in Chicago when he first came tothis country and started boxing. Later he talked my grandparents Einar and Ruth Blomquist intorelocating to Stone Lake. They owned Sissabagama Lodge on Big Sissabagama from 1949 to 1969. Enjoyed your pics of Karl's place on Little Sissabagama." --Jerry
