When we were very young Wally and I had attic bedrooms - For "Mother's Day" we had saved 10¢ to spend on Mom. Local dime store sold us a pack of safety pins and a candy bar - Night before Mother's Day we'd sneak downstairs and put our gifts on the kitchen table with the homemade card and yard flowers. Mom loved it - always acted so surprised - we laughed til we cried-

My brother Wally and I were poor "Depression Era" children - Wally was 6 and I was 8. So the kitchen in our house had a stairway leading up to the attic - Well! Wally and I had a "Laughing Day" once a week, usually on Saturday, we would sit on the 6th step and start to giggle which grew into crazy laughter - Laughed until we cried - It felt s-oo good!

Did I mention we were poor Depression Era children? Toys were practically non-existent yet we were rarely boared - I've put on impromptu shows in our back yard - admission was a button - told great ghost stories sitting on the front porch - roasted potatoes in small twig fires - played street games til bedtime - traded treasures we found in the alley and always laughed alot.

When we kids did naughty stuff - oh our mom was not a "hitter." But boy such a tongue lashing we got - I swear she'd bring up every naughty thing we did since birth - We'd beg her - "Please Please Mom beat us - here's the broom - hit us just no more yelling!" Then we'd all laugh til we cried - Louise S., Hammond, IN
I've lived in a Chicago suburb in the 1930's -
I was embarrased sometime cause my foreign born Lithuanian Mom kept a milking cow and chickens in the barn, also a vegetable garden. But by golly we always had plenty of milk, eggs, butter...etc. And real whip cream! Our snacks were fried potato slices and pan butterscotch candy (just cooked butter and sugar).
