"There were two sights upriver that were constant, that were friends, and that always made me feel whole. One was a large rock that stuck out of the water in the middle of the river and past the rock on Ferd's property was a white pine tree on the water's edge. You might think it odd that a tree would be so strong in memory, but not if you saw this tree. And you can! On July 3, 1989 Joan and I drove from our cottage to the Flambeau. I followed the old road which is not now in use for there is a new bridge down the stream from the old. We parked just short of the old bridge--still there but grown smaller-and walked to the middle of that bridge. I saw the rock, my rock, and --Oh my God!-the white pine standing over all! I hear that "nothing is forever", but that is enough for me. Fifty years have passed and my friends are still there." Excerpt from
