"Do you know what a flambeau is? It is a flaming torch. Just below the double trunk, and now fifteen feet or so from the ground, you can still see scars in the trunk of the pine tree I love. Scars where, long before Ferd's time, flaming torches were lit and placed, stuck in the tree to guide the night passage of those on the river. That haunts me. This tree was mine in my place of guidance and it is still there now, fifty years later. And so am I. I hope these Flambeau stores will light your passage, and yours, after you pass along."
