Miniature Log Homes

On rainy cottage days we look for things to do in front of the fireplace. On drippy days, Papa Dick encourages outside projects always claiming that "It looks worse from the inside. Once you get outside it's not so bad!" Enticing some of the boys outside on one such day, he told them they'd go into the woods, cut some small saplings and bring them back to the cottage. After removing the twigs and leaves, he cut the saplings into lengths of ten, eight, six and three inches. Then they could build miniature log houses or forts. Armed with a glue gun and supervised by Papa Dick and parents, the building project was set up. Moss was stuffed between the cracks and stones were collected for the fireplace, to be used both inside and on an outside wall of the log building and for the chimney.

One of our favorite family sayings is, "Uncle Gene could do it!" He's our resident expert and he willingly provides encouragement and direction for all building projects. After this project, it looked as if Gene would have competition since the boys took to their building with gusto. This beginning project was such a hit, that more extensive building projects are in store.
