MAN FIGHTS DOG "Once a belligerent lumberjack hit town in a mood for takin' on man or beast. In a barroom he heard of the feats of a pit bulldog owned by Jack Bolger. This dog, it seems, had cleaned up everything in the canine world and even vanquished a wolf. 'So this dog is a holy terror, is he? Well, so am I...and five dollars says I can lick him,' boasted the jack. The bet was covered. So the 'fightingest jack' invaded the lair of the vicious dog, got down on his hands and knees and growled, expecting to slug the animal the first rush. But when Minocqua's Dr. Torpy got there in a call, one side of the lumberjack's face had been ripped clear of the cheekbone, an ugly wound. 'So I sewed him up the best I could, and never a wince from,' says Dr. Torpy. 'I told him to come back and I'd remove the stitches. He did, months later--this time he had a full beard covering the scar. When I asked him who had taken out the stitches, he looked amazed and answered, 'So that's why I haven't been able to shave.'"
