Tarps and Bungi cords Before we did some remodeling of our very old cottage, we had a small bedroom that was fondly called the "hell hole." No one wanted to sleep on the ancient steel bunk beds in this room because it smelled like mold. The room found its rightful place in life by our five grandsons when they decided it would make a perfect fort. Using an odd collection of worn and torn blankets and old sheets, the boys would play for hours making their forts in every configuration imaginable. Insisting that the door remained closed until they invited the rest of us in to see their most recent creation, the room offered a bonus of relative peace and quiet while they were designing. "NO ADULTS ALLOWED" with a skull and crossbones was written and taped to the door. The "hell hole" later became
a bathroom, featuring the claw foot bathtub that belonged to
Papa Dick's Great Aunt Kate. He remembers baths in the old tub
that, when not in use, had a fitted, flowered cotton covering
on the top. Everyone was pleased with the new bathroom except
the boys. Their disappointment was appeased when Papa Dick bought
a variety of tarps in different sizes and colors and an array
of multicolored bungi cords. They now build their forts outside
and have expanded both their imagination and their games. Excerpt from
