SPRING AT THE CABIN
by Elizabeth Haling

A rustic cabin is all we've got
Some folks might think it's not a lot
But we can put up our feet on any chair
And not have to worry about what we wear

Leaves are raked for a few feet around
So we can find the paths and see the ground
And deprive the ticks and mosquitoes and fleas
Of a place to stay hidden out of the breeze

Trees are cut only if they pose a threat
And keeping up a lawn is no big sweat
Because grass we have not and therefore no mower
And we just sit back and watch God the sower
Surprise us each Spring with Trillium beds
And Jack-In-The-Pulpits bowing their heads

Just outside the kitchen is a wild berry patch
And out in the bay there are fish to catch
Last night by the dock an otter played
And a big Blue Heron landed nearby and stayed
For the longest time as we cooked our steaks
Over hardwood coals on a makeshift grate

The lake wends its way through the wilderness
And the driftwood shore it seems to caress
Where eagles soar and deer come to drink
And in the silence we can't help but think
How fortunate we are to be right here
In God's Country at this time of year
