SIGNS OF SPRING
The third week of March is the official date
But here in the North we have to wait
Until winter gives up and goes away
Before we know spring is here to stay
Some folks think that the true sign of spring
Is when they hear the first robin sing;
While others wait for the ground hog to appear
To see if his shadow is something to fear.
Maybe a crocus pushing up through the snow
Will be the sign for someone to know
That Old Man Winter made his last curtain call
And spring has sprung once and for all.
When the ice finally goes from the frozen lake
The fishermen do a double take
And get out their rods and check their bait
Because they know that spring can’t wait.
Pussy Willows puff beside country roads
And clothes lines hold the laundry loads
Hung by housewives anxious for the sweet
Spring smell on their towels and sheets.
Spring, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder,
And its signs seem to change as we get older.
I, for one, know exactly when spring knocks.
It’s when I can go to bed without wool socks !
